Tai and Wang won Universiade title on home soil

Taiwanese players have had great success in 2017 Universiade held on their home soil Taipei. They swept 5 gold and 3 bronze in total 6 categories.

 

Tai Tzu Ying (Women’s Singles), Wang Tzu Wei (Men’s Singles), Hsu Ya Ching & Wu Ti Jung (Women’s Doubles) became the big winners as they clinched both the individual and team gold.

Taiwanese home crowd had high expectations for World No.1 Tai Tzu Ying and she did not disappoint them at all. She blasted all her opponents with her usual elegant attacking game and tricky style.

 

She outplayed the upcoming Korean player and current world no. 23 Lee Jang Mi with 21-9 21-13 in the final, which makes the noise in the arena increase with several decibels.

Tai Tzu Ying won the title without dropping a set.

 

The Universiade was held at the same time as the World Championships, making many wondering why top players would participate at Universiade instead of the World Championships.

 

The World no. 1 and gold winner of the Universiade, Tai stated “I only get the chance to play for my home crowd at the Universiade this one time in my life, while I will get many other chances to participate in the World Championships in the future”

World No.12 Wang Tzu Wei faced Japan’s Kento Nishimoto in men’s single final; the two players met as well in the team event final and played a thrilling 3 set battle with Wang as the winner. This time, Wang played a very stable match and could raise his arms with a 2nd gold medal in one week with final scores 21-15 21-16.

Hsu Ya Ching and Wu Ti Jung had a magnificent week going through to clinch the women’s doubles gold without dropping a set. Their final was against a Thai pair Chaladchalam/Muenwong. Hsu and Wu kept their calm when the tension rose and closed the final 21-17 22-20.

In men’s doubles, Korean Seo Seung Jae and Kim Jae Hwan gave strong performances throughout the tournament and secured the gold with a final score against Japanese Tamate/Mitsuhashi 21-12 21-19. Taiwanese Lee Yang / Lee Jhe Huei won bronze.
