Badminton king Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia still reigns supreme at the top of the men’s singles rankings. Since the London Olympics in 2012 Lee’s main opponent Lin Dan of China has been absent from most major tournament so Lee has been unchallenged at the top of the rankings throughout 2013.

Sung Ji Hyun_3 20131126
The ROK’s Sung Ji Hyun’s has risen to fourth in the world rankings

As for the women’s singles, Li Xui Rui who occupies the top spot, opened up a big lead over second ranked player Intanon of Thailand by winning the China Open in November. VICTOR stars Sung Ji Hyun, Bae Yeon Ju. and Tai Tzu Ying are ranked 4th, 8th and 9th respectively; each has improved on last year in terms of skill and world ranking.

As for the men’s doubles, there have been substantial changes in the world rankings. The ROK’s Le/Ko ended their partnership in September and so have slipped down the ranking as their points have dwindled. They have been replaced as the top ranked pair by Indonesia’s Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan.

v1507 20131126
The ROK’s new popular men’s doubles pair Lee Yong Dae /Yoo Youn Seong

Highly popular Lee Yong Dae is now partnered by ROK team captain Yoo Youn Seong. They took the title on their first outing at the Denmark Open in October, just like they were announcing “We are the top ROK men’s doubles pair”. They kept up their momentum and claimed the title at the China Open Super Series Premium. Their world ranking climbed from 97th to 31st in just four weeks and it will rise further when the points they bagged at the Hong Kong Open are added.

Other VICTOR stars ranked in the Top 10 are: the ROK’s Kim Ki Jung/Kim Sa Rang ranked at 7th in the men’s doubles; Chinese Taipei’s  Lee Sheng Mu/Tsai Chia Hsin ranked at 8th in the men’s doubles;the ROK’s Jung Kyung Eun / Kim Ha Na ranked at 5th in the women’s doubles; the ROK’s Jang Ye Na/Kim So Yeong ranked at 9h in the women’s doubles; and Indonesia’s Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir, ranked second in the mixed doubles.

vb08 20131126
Indonesia’s Liliyana Natsir/Tontowi Ahmad are ranked at No. 2 in the world

Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir have performed brilliantly this year. After taking the Badminton World Championship title they took a first and a second place at the Denmark Open and China Open Super Series Premier. Their excellent results have allowed them to move closer and closer to top ranked pair China’s Zhang Nan/Zhao Yun Lei. If they can maintain this level of performance it can be expected that Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir will overtake Zhang/Zhao in the first half of 2014 to claim number one spot in the BWF world rankings!
